SHUTTERS ON THE BEACH
Shutters on the Beach sits directly on the sand, a block from the Santa Monica Pier. This luxury hotel has the feel of a 1920’s New England beach resort – sophisticated, yet comfortable. For me, absolutely nothing beats falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. The rooms are spacious and stylish, some have fireplaces; all have a balcony. The hotel’s spa One, offers full spa services. Shutters has 2 restaurants, the upscale One Pico and the more casual Pedals – both offer great meals. One Pico has perhaps the best Mother’s Day Brunch in L.A. After a rejuvenating walk along the beach, head to nearby Main Street for some of L.A.’s best shopping.

There is certainly no shortage of hip hotels in Los Angeles, but some stand out above the rest. My pick is Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills. The small boutique hotel is hard to find, tucked between tall buildings and trees on Olympic Boulevard.
Custom designed contemporary pieces mingle with vintage mid-20th century classics to create a comfortable and chic hideaway. The rooms are spacious and each includes a separate sitting area; many have private patios. The hotel’s restaurant Blue on Blue features modern American cuisine and was named one of Food & Wine’s “50 Best Hotel Restaurants.” Avalon’s most architecturally beautiful and striking feature it it’s figure eight shaped pool lined with restaurant tables and cozy cabanas. Whether you’re visiting for work or pleasure, ease into the night sipping on the bar’s signature drink, the Blue Avalon (Bacardi, Malibu, blue curacao, Sprite and pineapple juice), in a poolside cabana.

If you like your vacation spots homey and cozy, this is the place for you. Located in a National Historic Landmark home in Ohio City, a neighborhood on Cleveland’s near-west side, Glendennis House offers a private four-room suite for one group of guests at a time. They offer parking on site, and an organic breakfast brought to your room every morning. It’s within walking distance of the West Side Market, and a slew of great restaurants. Best of all, it’s on Bridge Avenue, one of the most charming residential streets in the city.

When I was in college, I used to walk by Glidden House and dream of staying there. Located in a 1910 brick and stone mansion, it’s a reminder that Cleveland was once the home of Rockefellers and other captains of industry. The location is prime, within walking distance of University Circle and Little Italy, and across the street from Cleveland’s Frank Gehry building. I’d recommend booking one of the vintage suites located in the historic part of the building – the Francis Harrington Suite has a working fireplace, perfect for chilly winter nights.

Hyatt Regency Cleveland at The Arcade
If need to stay at a national chain, this is the one to pick. The Hyatt Regency Cleveland is located in The Grand Arcade, a five-story atrium that connects Superior and Euclid Avenues. When it was built as a connector for two office buildings in 1890, it was the largest atrium in the world and it was modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. It’s still one of the more spectacular public spaces in the city.

One of the hardest things about visiting New York is finding a place to stay here. Friends don’t have extra bedrooms and hotels are either prohibitively expensive or soulless (and kinda scary) hovels. Luckily, Brooklyn is home to quite a few charming and inexpensive bed and breakfasts. The Sophia Inn is in a lovely old brownstone on a beautiful block in Park Slope just steps away from Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. A big bonus for design snobs such as myself: not a trace of the typical ruffly, saccharine décor the plagues many Northeastern bed and breakfasts!

Hawaii Prince Hotel
If you don’t want to get caught in the middle of busy Waikīkī, the luxurious Hawai‘i Prince is a great option because of its location at the entrance of Waikīkī.
Their spacious two bedroom Prince suites are ideal for larger parties. And when I say parties, I mean it. I’ve had friends rent out these suites to have a bunch of people over and it can fit a lot of people! Anyways, parties aside, this hotel is a classy choice!
Sheraton Waikīkī | 2255 Kalākaua Avenue Honolulu HI 96815 |
This past July, my family stayed at the Sheraton Waikīkī where my stepsister’s wedding was held. I’ve been to the hotel’s ballroom for many other occasions, including my senior prom, but this was my first time as a guest in their rooms and I was really impressed!
- Room at Sheraton
The rooms had clean lines, modern touches and weren’t too stuffy. The best part was the shutters in the bathroom that opened up to the living room – awkward, yet highly entertaining! The hotel is also close to lots of hip eateries Doraku Sushi and stores In4mation that you can cool off in after a long day in the sun
